Mosquito Magnet  Liberty Do It Yourself Repair

Yes ladies and gentlemen I have fixed my Mosquito Magnet Liberty myself.

I read online for days about all of the problems people have been having with these things.

Mine has been running for three years and the fan went out.Order your replacement here

Then like alot of you, I thought the first year it ran it was great, but each year after that it was less and less effective.

I decided to take mine apart and see what was up, I think I fount the problem with most EVERYONES machine.

1) First the fan fails, all moving parts eventually do.

2) The combustion chamber fills with oxidation over time and the burner is restricted or clogged.

First lets talk about how this thing works. ( I think )

1) Turn on the propane

2) Power up the unit

3) Warm Up light flashes for three minutes while the fan is running.

4) After three minutes it turns on the propane and tries to light it (igniter).

There is a sensor (thermistor) to see if its getting hot, if it does not in an additional 7 minutes it faults. (fault lights)

Figure 1 is a description of the components

Here is where I think everyone's problems are.

Over time the aluminum and propane create an oxidation inside the combustion chamber / heat exchanger and restrict it or clog it.

I believe this is why it works great the first year, then less and less each year after as more and more accumulates.

Now with the unit completely clogged the unit will not light, and it gives a "Gas Empty / Insufficient gas flow".

This is also why some people say use the "Quick-Clear" cartridge several times, in hopes it blows out this STUFF.

I tried that and although after the second bottle the hissing sound coming out of the horn was louder and it did clear "some" out.

I always assumed the "Quick-Clear" was for cleaning the propane nozzle, but now I believe its to blow out this STUFF.

By the way, this unit will not light if the fan and cover are not on and working properly. It must push some air into the combustion chamber some how to help start the combustion process. Because I tried lighting it with the fan out and it would not light, but if I put a match by the thermistor hole I had a small flame shoot out. Please do not try this, because as I found out, even if you shut it off and unplug the propane, there is still enough in the system to keep that flame going for a few minutes. Its not a huge flame, about the size of a good lighter.

So I took this hole thing apart and cleaned it, Fig 2 shows what i'm talking about.

I cleaned mine with a wire brush. I plan on doing this at the START of every season.
This way anything that may have happened over the winter, critters crawling inside, I will get out.

Be sure to get the drain hole very clean, this is how any condensation get out.

Also make sure you put the chamber in back in the correct direction. The metal screen goes toward the Propane Nozzle.

The stud that holds the Thermistor was gone on mine. So I used a piece of wire to hold it in.

That's about it.

I wish I had started taking pictures while I was taking it apart. But I didn't think of it until I found the problem.

Good Luck!
